Manolo Paz

Manolo Paz in Malaga

Sep 20 - Nov 20, 2023

Manolo Paz (Cambados, Galicia, 1957) is one of the most prominent sculptors in the artistic scene. His work, independent of trends, aims to transform inert matter into works of art. Since his beginnings, he has worked with industrial materials such as concrete or metal, occasionally incorporating natural elements like granite or wood in his production. His creations transform landscapes from his native Galicia to Japan and become part of the urban scenery in cities like Brussels, Stuttgart, or Chicago.

In the year 2022, Manolo Paz held two outdoor sculpture exhibitions in the cities of Santiago de Compostela and Madrid. Coinciding with the celebration of the Xacobeo year, five sculptures by the artist from Cambados were installed in the old town and the City of Culture of Santiago de Compostela, in places as significant as the Plaza del Obradoiro or the Parque de la Alameda. In the autumn of the same year, the exhibition “La distancia que une” (The Distance that Unites) was moved to one of Madrid’s most emblematic walks, the axis formed by the Paseo del Prado and Paseo de Recoletos, occupying spaces such as the Plaza de Cibeles or the gardens of the Thyssen- Bornemisza Museum, to celebrate the designation of the area known as the “Paisaje de la Luz” (Landscape of Light) as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The artist from Cambados invites us to walk along this path guided by seven of his sculptures that are perfectly integrated into the urban and natural landscape of the city of Malaga. In places like Alameda Principal, Archivo Municipal, Molina Lario, Parque de Málaga, and
Plaza del Centre Pompidou Málaga, Manolo Paz’s sculptures are connected through this axis of culture, art, and landscape, becoming the ideal setting for a dialogue with contemporary art by the hand of the Galician sculptor, for whom nature is a cornerstone of his artistic practice.
