Deliberately radical, La Ribot's artistic production configures a universe in which categories merge and labels are confused, in which gender is questioned and any object, real or figurative, can be interrogated; a universe of abundance and creativity, dominated by color and acid humor. The shows by this dancer and choreographer have been held on many stages around the world.
A pioneer of contemporary dance, she has expanded the possibilities introducing it into museums. Her questions in the fields of video creation and the plastic arts, which she has also cultivated, have led her to develop the concept of “corps-opérateur” (body operator) in her video works. She uses all kinds of supports and is not limited to a genre or an artistic discipline, a freedom of action and transversal and unlimited thought that she associates with her condition as an artist.
The constellation proposed at the Mercat de Flors is made up of two great shows and four video works and video installation formats. The shows are Panoramix (1993-2003), an anthology of her distinguished Pieces of the 1990s, and Laughing Hole (2006), an installation piece on the frontier of performance. The works in video installation format are Despldamientos (2001), Another pa amb tomàquet (2002) and Beware of Imitations! (2014) as well as the video Mariachi 17 (2009). It is, therefore, a constellation of scenic works and video installations that, as elements of language, allow us to capture the creativity and acute relevance of this artist’s work, full of universal and timeless themes, still valid today. Her innovative and surprising practice serves above all to denounce, displace and question everything in our society that is at stake.
In addition, MACBA joins the constellation with a program that it will carry out from April 26 with the Pièce distinguishes nº 45; There will also be a talk between La Ribot, the director of the Mercat de les Flors Àngels Margarit and the head of MACBA Programs Pablo Martínez. And from April 26 to May 6, FILM NOIR will be projected at the MACBA tower.
