Museum of the Moving Image | March 10th - 1 October 2023

Cinema of Sensations: The Never Ending Screen of Val del Omar, a major exhibition at Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) opening on March 10th 2023, will present key works by Jose Val del Omar, a Spanish mid-20th Century visual artist and inventor whose works were an early example of ‘expanded cinema’.

More than forty years have elapsed since the death of José Val del Omar; nonetheless, his legacy lives on. María José Val del Omar and Gonzalo Sáenz de Buruaga, daughter and son in law of the Granada-born creator, began the recuperation and siffusion of his work before his disappearance in 1982.

The exhibition brings Val del Omar’s groundbreaking cinematic installations to U.S. audiences for the first time. Val del Omar’s work is presented alongside commissioned pieces by contemporary artists Sally Golding, Matt Spendlove, and Tim Cowlishaw; Duo Prismáticas; Esperanza Collado; and Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, who interpret and draw on his work for inspiration. The exhibition is organized by invited curator Almudena Escobar López; curatorial advisor and director of  Archivo Val del Omar, Piluca Baquero and advisor and president of Archivo Val del Omar, Gonzalo Sáenz de Buruaga, in collaboration with Archivo Val del Omar,  Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and galería Max Estrella, con el apoyo de The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, National Endownment for the Arts and Acción Cultural Española.

Cinema of Sensations will be the primary focus at MoMI for a six-month period, taking over all of the Museum’s extensive temporary galleries, and be the focal point for our extensive education and public outreach programs.
